Tom Groth, Agency Principal
“If you asked me when I was young what I wanted to do, I would never have answered insurance. However, ask me now and I’ll tell you how happy I am to be working in insurance providing real value to my clients. Each day is new and interesting, and each client has a distinct set of circumstances that need to be addressed.”
Tom started his career in advertising working in sales. He sold to one specific market and found it stifling. He wanted to branch out and work with many different markets. He was recruited by a small insurance agency in Boston and the fact that Tom didn’t have any insurance experience was a plus, because this agency wanted someone fresh and young — someone they could mold and shape — not another “insurance retread”.
Working in insurance opened up different avenues for Tom and offered him much more diversity working with different clients. Tom found that learning about different businesses was both interesting and challenging.
After working at the small agency for two years, it was purchased by Aon Risk Services which presented him greater opportunities. At Aon, Tom was involved in all aspects of the business and was the Leader of their Middle Market operations in Boston and Providence for the last several years of his tenure there. In 2001, he joined the Providence office of Marsh as a Producer, eventually becoming Office Head in 2006.
In 2008, Tom joined the Charles River management team. Tom’s 20+ years of insurance knowledge was and still is a plus for Charles River Brokerage Insurance. His major focus is the upper middle market.
Tom’s in-depth knowledge of insurance, keen listening skills and prompt response are attributes he brings to his clients. Another benefit he offers his clients is his persistence to get the job done right. Tom takes pride in that he is always available to his clients and believes that good communication is the key to his success. He doesn’t believe in taking on a client unless he is sure that he can save them money and / or drastically improve their coverage.
Tom graduated in 1984 with a BS from Babson College. He is married and has two children in college. Tom, like many of the Charles River team, likes to play golf and enjoys working on projects around the house and landscaping.
